Netmarble is planning to release games based on popular comics from Korea and Japan in order to bolster its lineup of new game titles and attract new users, according to the company, Monday.
The company unveiled the first promotional video for Shangri-La Frontier, a game the company is currently developing based on the popular comic series from Japanese publishing company Kodansha. The promotional video shows the characters in action and a brief introduction that gives a glimpse into the game's world.
The comic series depicts the adventures of a high school student who plays the virtual reality game Shangri-La Frontier. In July 2022, Netmarble said it would collaborate with Kodansha to produce the game and participate with the animation production committee to create an animated feature based on the comic series.
Netmarble added the animation version of Shangri-La Frontier will air in Japan this October, and the release date for the game version and further details will be announced later.
Netmarble said its strategy of releasing games based on popular comics is an appeal to both fans of the source content and game fans. In addition to Shangri-La Frontier, the company is set to release Tower of God: New World, a new game based on the popular online comic "Tower of God" this month.
The Korean comic series has registered over 6 billion views. When producing the game version, Netmarble said it focused on narrative and structured the game to be enjoyed as if watching an animation. This will be the first time Netmarble will launch a game based on a Korean comic series.
The company said that it has gained unrivaled experience in converting original content into games and that its upcoming comics-based games will be able to meet the expectations of players.
"In addition to Tower of God: New World, which will be released on July 26, Netmarble will release Solo Leveling: Arise and Shangri-La Frontier and we are preparing various works based on famous original intellectual properties," a company spokesman said. "We will utilize our know-how in creating successful works based on many original intellectual properties, such as The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross and Ni no Kuni: Cross Worlds, to ensure that our upcoming works will meet the expectations of fans and users of the original intellectual properties around the world."
