SK Group's theme at CES 2022 is eco-friendly technology, spanning from artificial intelligence (AI)-powered semiconductors to electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
Affiliates including SK Telecom, SK Innovation and SK hynix have been presenting the group's pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, at the world's largest tech show running until Friday, local time, in Las Vegas.
SK Telecom (SKT) presented its AI-powered "Sapeon" semiconductor and its single radio access network (SRAN) technology, which enables mobile carriers to support multiple mobile communications standards and wireless services on a single network. The SRAN technology uses 53 percent of the power used by a network that employs only a single mobile communications standard, SKT said. Sapeon, meanwhile, uses 80 percent of the power used by existing graphics processing units.
SK Innovation said it discussed further business opportunities with U.S. solid-state battery developer Solid Power at this year's CES. SK Innovation invested $30 million into the U.S. company in October, and the two have agreed to co-develop next-generation solid-state batteries. Solid-state batteries are considered high-capacity electric batteries, given they have higher energy density than Li-ion batteries that use liquid electrolyte solution.
SK affiliates' efforts are part of SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won's "Net-Zero Pledge." SK has pledged to cut 200 million tons of carbon emissions globally by 2030. Chey has declared SK affiliates will cut 1 percent of the total 21 billion tons of carbon emissions the world is aiming to eliminate by 2030.

Meanwhile, SK stated it is seeking to work with U.S. chip company Qualcomm in the sector of semiconductors and information and communication technology (ICT).
SK Square Vice Chairman Park Jung-ho discussed business opportunities with Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon at CES on Thursday, local time. SK Square is SK Group's affiliate focusing on new investments.
CEOs of ICT affiliates SKT and SK hynix, Ryu Young-sang and Lee Seok-hee, were also present at the meeting with Qualcomm's key executives. SK hynix explored possibilities of co-developing high-speed memory chips that can be used in personal computers and applications for data centers. SKT discussed prospects of working with Qualcomm in 5G-related B2C and B2B businesses, such as metaverse and smart factories.

Korea's major conglomerates presented throughout the show running the Jan. 5 to Jan. 7 their latest technologies. LG took part in the show virtually this year. LG said its booth at the show was made with oriented strand boards made with wood waste and recyclable material without using adhesives, to make it easier for the material to be recycled once again after the event.
