Among imported vehicles to Korea, leading German automakers BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen had the highest number of recalls in the past five years, according to a report released Wednesday.
Park Sang-hyuk, a lawmaker and a member of the National Assembly's National Transportation Committee, said BMW had the most recalls among imported cars in the last five years, citing data compiled by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Automobile Recall Center.
BMW's recalls totaled 417 in 2018, 684 in 2019, 527 in 2020, and 703 last year. Through August this year, there have been 371 recalls.
The number of recalls by year for Mercedes-Benz was 302 in 2018, 216 in 2019, 234 in 2020, and 545 last year. As of August of this year, 258 recalls have been counted. Volkswagen Korea recorded 107 recalls in 2018, 58 in 2019, 115 in 2020, 85 last year, and 102 recalls through August this year.
Overall, in the case of the total number of vehicles recalled for the domestic market over the last five years, Hyundai Motor had the highest number of vehicles recalled with 4.45 million vehicles, followed by Kia with 2.85 million, BMW Korea with 1.14 million, Mercedes-Benz with 736,000 and GM Korea with 729,973.
