Here's what Xi can learn from Putin
In his quest to make his country the undisputed leader of the global economy, China's President Xi Jinping can learn a lot from his next-door neighbor, Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

In case of human rights emergency, break glass and give these athletes money
In some professional sports circles, apparently all it takes to make athletes forget their high-minded principles is the waving of a wad of dollars under their noses. Sure, they're quick to take a symbolic knee or wear an armband to raise awareness for a good cause, but lonely are those brave athletes who dare to sacrifice participation in high-dollar tournaments to warn oppr...

Peddlers of fake news can wreak havoc in real world
Normally, the St. Louis-based website The Gateway Pundit can and should be laughed off as right-wing, fake-news nonsense. But as Reuters recently reported, the site's false allegations of election fraud in jurisdictions around the country have stoked harassment and death threats against two dozen election officials.

Will responsible gun owners please stand up - and speak out?
The school shooting in Oxford, Michigan, that left four students dead was, sadly, not terribly surprising. There were six U.S. school shootings in the month of November alone. While others, like the one a...

US needs to know what UFOs are
A few years ago, it would have drawn jokes and scorn. But given the continuing mystery over what, exactly, U.S. military pilots are seeing in the skies, a congressional proposal to create an “Anomaly Surveillance and Resolution Office” - an office to investigate what used to be called UFOs - makes sense.

Sentencing Aung San Suu Kyi to prison is just one more turn on Myanmar's spiral downward
In the last decade, Aung San Suu Kyi has gone from being one of the most prominent symbols of democracy in the world to being one of the most rebuked. Her father, the founder of Myanmar's military, became a politician and activist who devoted himself to the effort to win independence from Britain but was assassinated before he could see that achieved.

Russia is testing Western military resolve over Ukraine's sovereignty
Vladimir Putin wants the world to forget what happened in 2014. That's the year he amassed troops at the Ukraine border to assist Russian-backed separatists fighting the Kyiv central government. They wound up shooting down a Malaysian jumbo jet, killing all 298 aboard. Also in 2014, Russia staged the conditions for Putin's illegal seizure and annexation of Ukraine's Crimean P...

Charging parents of school shooters should become standard practice
Prosecutors in the recent Michigan school shooting by a 15-year-old student that left four dead also have filed manslaughter charges against the shooter's parents, whose gun he used. This should become standard practice for school shooting cases when the young shooters are only armed because of their parents' carelessness.
