Leaning together to freedom
These days, the Yoon Suk Yeol administration has continued its diplomatic efforts. They succeed in working in unison with the United States and Japan on Northeast Asian security. The major gambit concerns China, not North Korea, though Kim Jong-un continues the usual antics to demand attention. Yoon and his government face criticism for working with Japan, including from China. I'd say the latter is the surest sign Yoon and South Korea are moving in the right direction.

It's not all in a title
I'm not a fan of Camilla's title change. She will soon ascend from Camilla Queen Consort to Queen Camilla. This is solely because she is the monarch's wife. I don't agree with Charles in naming Camilla Queen. Why? Because she and he immorally carried on a marriage-breaking affair while he enthralled the world with Diana, his first wife - jealous though he was of her.

Freedom scores, autocrats parry, 'Pilseung Korea!'
The contest between the Alliances for Autocracy and Freedom continues. Its energy gains pace. The year 2023 has been a busy year thus far. Russia's prosecution of a war on Ukraine has stalemated, with a spring offensive by Ukraine in the offing. Finland has joined NATO, a major blow to Russian regional ambitions and autocracy.

Busan 2030 is now!
Among momentous occasions, hosting a World Exposition, or World Expo, marks the profile of advancing nations. Displaying a country's development, leadership in industry, cultures and people, World Expo 2030 likely will bring millions to the host country. London hosted the first World Expo in 1851, opened by Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. The most recent occurred in Dubai (Expo 2020). Argentina and Japan will host Expo 2023 and Expo 2025 respectively.

Of drones and things
Last week, and this week, the United States used its daunting military might to take down a large Chinese surveillance balloon and several other smaller flying objects, so far not fully identified. The White House spokesperson has reassured us they're not extraterrestrial. Media outlets ramp doubt. Each sitting and downing has involved some temporary closing of airspace by NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command. Thus far, few flights saw delays.

Friends and enemies
In politics and human relations, today's friends may be friends for a long time, or not. They may be enemies in the future. This applies to current enemies and neutral parties. They may be the fastest of friends or bitterest of enemies in time. Sages have stated this maxim. I'm familiar with Plato's version in “The Republic.”

Approaching 2023
As the peoples of the world move closer to a new year, there is time to reflect on opportunities, challenges and successes. The United States and South Korea are but two of many, many global partners and nations. There's no perfect place or perfection under the sun, moon and stars.

The bluff
It seems Kim Jong-un can't get enough of missile launches. He's launched short-range missiles, midrange missiles, missiles landing in the East Sea, and some that could reach the United States mainland.

Looking back and ahead
I moved this summer to a new home. I packed up my life over several decades and “put it” in a new place. In turn, I have begun to sort through my effects. There are books I am going to give to my school library. There are clothes, toys, and carpets to present to Goodwill, a charitable non-for-profit in America. However, I found treasures, not with monetary value, but for my soul. Pictures, toys from my childhood, photographs and family objects, and artifacts of my life as a son, brother, husband, father, and professor.

Standing on the shoulders
My retired colleague, Dr. Hannah Jones, one of the first United Nations representatives from Liberia, taught me the phrase, “standing on their shoulders.” Each of us forms a link in life's caravan. Life depends on elders, on those who come before us. We have juniors standing on our shoulders, to the end of time. If time moves forward, it also repeats the past.
