Sequencing will not work
Hand wringing over the sudden end to the much-anticipated summit between President Trump and Chairman Kim in Hanoi follows several well-worn paths. The most common one blamed the Cohen hearing that sucked the media energy out of what was happening in Hanoi and Trump's reluctance to announce anything that would be buried in that Cohen avalanche.

Angry young men in Korea
Much has been made over recent poll numbers that suggest young Korean men in their 20s and 30s are peeved at President Moon Jae-in for favoring women over men in his policies. The South China Morning Post, in an article titled, “Why has the support for South Korea's President Moon Jae-in collapsed among young men?” writes, “In a survey carried out by South Korean polling firm Realmeter last month, just 29.4 per cent of men in their 20s said they approved of Moon, compared to 64.5 percent of women in the same age bracket.” Compare that to the 87 percent support that Moon enjoyed from the same...

New Year's resolutions
So, I woke up on the morning of Jan. 1 knowing that I had already failed my New Year's resolution. I was to start the new year by going somewhere with an unimpeded view of the horizon and greeting the first sunrise of the year. I was to let the refreshed vigor and energy of the Year of the Pig infuse me with a “can-do” spirit while whipping my chronic procrastination into a cowardly retreat back into the dark corner of my id.

Active shooter trolley problem
In June, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) released a report titled, “A Study of Pre-Attack Behaviors of Active Shooters in the United States Between 2000 and 2013.” The report examined 63 active shooters from 2000 to 2013 to see whether there were behavioral cues leading up to the attack.

Last analog president
George H.W. Bush was my first president as an adult, and I wasn't impressed. It felt like we were getting the second fiddle to the larger-than-life Ronald Reagan, a listless holdover from an analogue era struggling to understand the new digital age with MTV attention span. Perhaps it was inevitable that Bush lost to Bill Clinton after a single term. Clinton was charismatic, energetic and polished, everything Bush wasn't.

Being thankful on Thanksgiving
In today's hyper-commercialized society, it's easy to lose track of what the original intent of various holidays was. If we were to perform a word association test with everyday folks for Thanksgiving, the words that would pop first in one's mind would be SALE, Black Friday, turkey, fried, stuffing, traffic, crowded airports, family arguments, racist uncle, and the like. Actual gratitude would be far down the list.

Neuroscience of inhumanity
A Nov. 6 New York Times article stated, “Over 200 mass graves holding as many as 12,000 bodies have been found in areas of Iraq once controlled by the Islamic State,” citing United Nations figures. The findings were highlighted in a joint report released by the United Nations mission to Iraq and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, which called the sites a 'legacy of terror.'”

Dangun's box of bones
Reuters recently published a story titled, “North Korea's box of bones: A mythical king and the dream of Korean unification.” It claims that Dangun, although a myth, nevertheless has the narrative power to be the unifying cultural lynchpin for an eventual Korean reunification.
