Forward-looking policies for Asia and Pacific
Forward-looking policies for Asia and Pacific
The recently-launched 2013 Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific of ESCAP is forecasting subdued growth of 6 percent for the region in 2013 - up from 5.6 percent in 2012. Although highest amongst regional growth rates, this is considerably lower than the pre-crisis level and the level achieved immediately after the crisis in 2010.

The battle for Burma
The battle for Burma
Last month, as the anti-Muslim violence in Burma spread from Rakhine state in western Burma to the central Burmese city of Meiktila, Aung San Suu Kyi sat among the generals on the reviewing stand as the Burmese army marched past on Armed Forces Day. She is seen as a saint by many people - but she didn’t say anything about Meiktila, where just days before at least 40 people we...

The long mystery of low interest rates
The long mystery of low interest rates
CAMBRIDGE - As policymakers and investors continue to fret over the risks posed by today’s ultra-low global interest rates, academic economists continue to debate the underlying causes. By now, everyone accepts some version of U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s statement in 2005 that a “global savings glut” is at the root of the problem. But economists disagree on w...

Germany's choice
Germany's choice
FRANKFURT - The euro crisis has already transformed the European Union from a voluntary association of equal states into a creditor-debtor relationship from which there is no easy escape. The creditors stand to lose large sums should a member state exit the monetary union, yet debtors are subjected to policies that deepen their depression, aggravate their debt burden, and per...

Korean regionalism
Korean regionalism
No country or nation can claim to be completely unified. Differences between parts of a country or nation capture diversity, situate opportunities for learning and collaboration, and reflect deeper sources of environmental, cultural, and other social heterogeneity. Despite the fact that South Korea is often viewed as a very homogenous culture, the enduring relevance of Honam ...
