Women's status in Korean society
Women's status in Korean society
My daughter-in-law contracted COVID-19. My wife and I were heartbroken to see that she is terribly sick and burnt out, all the while, fulfilling her multiple roles as an attorney, wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and mother of our granddaughter. Her workload and responsibilities poignantly highlight the dire status of women in Korea.

Dangers and opportunities of assumptions
Dangers and opportunities of assumptions
Assumptions have a bad reputation. We tend to think that they can impede our dealings with people or even with organizational phenomena, because they might blind us to what's really going on. However, we talk less about how - despite their drawbacks - they are necessary to leading an organization effectively: it is impossible to navigate the world without assumptions.

Early spring visitor, red apricot flowers
Early spring visitor, red apricot flowers
Last mid-February, my Facebook friend introduced me to a church in Suncheon, South Jeolla Province which had red apricot trees over 100 years old that were in bloom. As I got to the church, the trees with mossy branches had flowers that looked withered by the cold weather, but some appeared fresh and fancy.

Are nuclear power plants safe?
Are nuclear power plants safe?
President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol pledged to raise the proportion of nuclear power in Korea's electricity generation from the current level of 25-29 percent to 30-35 percent by 2030. He also said that he would restart building Sin Hanul reactors 3 and 4 whose construction has been suspended. But is it safe to use nuclear power?

A man for all seasons
A man for all seasons
“It was simply the right thing to do.” - J. Robert “Bob” Lunney It's not often that we hear about someone who does the right thing for the right reasons at the right time. But Bob Lunney pulled it off. Again, and again. And it wasn't by mere luck or circumstance that he made a positive impact on thousands of people. Bob made things happen because he believed that serving othe...

Korean voters reconfirm law-abiding democracy
Korean voters reconfirm law-abiding democracy
South Korea's voters have elected Yoon Suk-yeol of the conservative People Power Party their next leader. He will take office in May, succeeding President Moon Jae-in, after defeating Lee Jae-myung of the governing Democratic Party of Korea. Under the constitution, the president serves a single five-year term and cannot run for re-election.

Ukraine war and sunflowers
Ukraine war and sunflowers
In less than two weeks since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, 1.5 million out of a population of 44 million have already fled Ukraine, according a report by the U.N. refugee agency. They are mostly women and children with their toys and crying faces. Men aged 18 to 60 remain in Ukraine to defend their country. The number of refugees is certainly growing. Thousands and t...

Writing for the fun of it
Writing for the fun of it
What drives one to write? To answer this question, George Orwell, Britain's renowned novelist and essayist, wrote an essay titled "Why I Write" in 1946. In this essay he explores the reasons why writers write, citing his own example. Orwell says that putting aside the need to earn a living, there are four great motives for writing, particularly for writing prose. They are she...

On positive mindset
On positive mindset
To lead a decent life, we need a positive frame of mind. True happiness and joy do not reside in power or money, but derive from a positive mindset. It is my firm conviction that an optimistic, positive attitude is the source of or starting point for satisfaction and happiness. Indeed, positivity creates happiness; negativity invites sadness.
