No Grammy awards for BTS doesn't mean 'failure'

방탄소년단, 그래미 수상 불발 '실패’ 아냐

K-pop behemoth BTS did not succeed in winning any trophies at this year's Grammy Awards, Sunday (PST), but that should not be considered a failure, music industry experts say.
일요일 K팝의 걸어 다니는 기업 방탄소년단이 올해의 그래미 수상에는 성공하지 못했지만 음악계 전문가들은 이를 실패로 간주해서는 안 된다고 말했다.

The septet was nominated in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for its 2021 summer banger, "Butter." The honor, however, went to Doja Cat and SZA for their hit song, "Kiss Me More."
이 7인조 그룹은 2021년 여름 명곡 ‘버터'로 베스트 팝 듀오/그룹 퍼포먼스 부문의 후보로 지명되었다. 하지만 해당 부문에서는 도자 캣과 스자가 히트곡 ‘키스 미 모어(Kiss Me More)'로 영광을 가져갔다.

"BTS was left empty-handed this time, but this means the group still has a lofty goal to achieve," Kim Jin-woo, a music business professor at the Seoul Institute of the Arts and the head researcher for album/streaming chart Gaon, told The Korea Times.
김진우 서울예술대학교 실용음악과 교수이자 가온차트 수석연구위원은 코리아타임스와의 인터뷰에서 "방탄소년단은 이번엔 빈손으로 떠나야 했지만 (이는) 이 그룹이 여전히 이뤄야 할 높은 목표가 있다는 것을 의미한다"고 말했다.

"So we should not call this a failure. It should be seen as an opportunity for BTS to tackle another challenge."
"따라서 우리는 이를 실패라고 불러서는 안 된다. 방탄소년단이 또 다른 도전과 싸울 기회로 보아야 한다."

Music critic Han Dong-yoon echoed this sentiment, saying, "Since the popularity of ‘Butter' has been immense around the world, a lot of people might have gotten disappointed by the news. But this is only the second time that BTS has been nominated, following its first nomination in 2020 in the same category for ‘Dynamite.' The HYBE stars have been broadening their horizons over the past few years, so I believe they will get a nod from the Grammys one day if they continue to forge their own path."
한동윤 음악 평론가도 이러한 감상에 공명하며 "전세계적으로 ‘버터'의 인기가 어마어마 했기 때문에 많은 사람들이 이 소식에 실망했을지도 모른다. 하지만 2020년 방탄소년단이 같은 부문에 ‘다이너마이트'로 후보에 오른 후 겨우 두 번째 시상식일 뿐이다. 하이브는 지난 몇 년간 자신들의 영역을 넓혀왔으며, 따라서 이 길을 계속 걷다 보면 언젠가 그래미에서 인정을 받게 될 것이라 믿는다"라고 말했다.

Anticipation was palpable ahead of this year's Grammy Awards, which took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, given that "Butter" made waves on numerous global charts, dominating the Billboard main singles chart for 10 weeks following its release last May 21.
지난해 5월 21일 발표 후 ‘버터'가 여러 국제 차트에 오르고 빌보드 메인 싱글 차트를 10주 동안 석권한 상황에서 미국 라스베이거스의 MGM 그랜드 가든 아레나에서 열린 올해의 그래미 시상식을 앞두고 기대감이 뚜렷했다.
