Lost in the shuffle of the two sensational Asiad swimming gold medals for Korea on Monday was a bronze medal that ended a long drought for the country.
월요일 아시안게임에서 수영 경기 종목에서만 금메달 2개가 나와 혼란스러운 사이, 동메달 한 개가 한국의 오랜 가뭄을 끝냈다.
Choi Dong-yeol won the bronze in the men's 100-meter breaststroke in Hangzhou, becoming the first Korean in 61 years to reach the podium in that event.
최동열 선수는 항저우에서 남자 100m 평영 결승 동메달을 차지해 한국 선수로는 무려 61년 만에 아시안게임에서 메달을 획득하게 됐다.
Choi, 24, broke his own Korean record with a time of 59.28 seconds. He had set the previous mark just two months earlier at the world championships, with 59.59 seconds.
최동열(24)은 59초28로 자신의 한국 기록을 갱신했다. 그는 불과 두 달 전 세계선수권에서 자신의 종전 기록 59초59를 앞당겼었다.
With Qin Haiyang of China, the reigning world champion, running away with the gold at 57.76 seconds, Choi battled another Chinese, Yan Zibei, for second place. Yan ended up 0.19 second faster than the Korean.
세계 챔피언으로 군림 중인 중국의 친하이양은 57초76으로 독보적으로 금메달을 획득했고, 최동열은 또 다른 중국 선수인 옌쯔베이와 2위를 두고 다퉜다. 옌쯔베이는 이 한국 선수보다 0.19초 앞서 경기를 마쳤다.
Choi said afterward he had come a long way to wear the Asian Games medal around his neck.
최동열은 경기 후 목에 아시안게임 메달을 걸기 위해 먼 길을 돌아왔다고 밝혔다.
"Just a few years ago, it was surreal for me just to compete at an international meet," Choi said. "I can't believe I got to stand on the podium here. Since I finished third here, there's room for me to go higher. If I can keep working on my weaknesses, I should be able to reach the top at some point." (Yonhap)
최 선수는 "불과 몇 년 전까지만 해도 국제대회에 참가하는 것도 꿈같았다"며 "이번 대회에서 시상대에 올랐다는 게 믿기지 않는다. 이번에 3위를 했으니 올라갈 곳이 남았다. 부족한 점을 채워나가면 언젠가 가장 높은 곳에 설 수 있을 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
