The Korea Times and the Asia Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (APLN) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Tuesday to hold an essay contest on the subject, "Nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament in the Asia-Pacific region."
Korea Times President-Publisher Oh Young-jin and APLN Vice Chair and Executive Director Moon Chung-in, who concurrently serves as special adviser to President Moon Jae-in, signed the MOU at The Korea Times head office. The contest is aimed to foster a new generation of young people committed to nuclear issues and foster international opinion in favor of global nonproliferation and nuclear disarmament.
The contest targets Korean and international students ― both graduates and undergraduates ― who are invited to submit essays in English of about 800 words on one of the following three topics: "What lessons can we learn from South Africa which voluntarily and unilaterally denuclearized?"; "How can international treaties such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) be operated effectively?"; and "Can artificial intelligence (AI) mechanisms such as autonomous drones make the world safer from nuclear threats?"
The contest aims to propel engagement with young people and provide fresh perspectives on nuclear issues. All essays submitted will be placed in the same pool of applications.
Winners will receive a small monetary prize and a certificate, and see their work published in the APLN and The Korea Times. Details of the contest including deadline for submission and announcement of prizes for the winners will be published soon by The Korea Times and APLN and made available on their websites.
