Despite taking on a first antagonistic role, actress Lim Ji-yeon has made a strong impression with her latest performance as vicious queen bee Park Yeon-jin in Netflix's hit series "The Glory," proving herself a versatile actor.
배우 임지연은 최근 넷플릭스 인기 드라마 '더 글로리'에서 자신의 첫 악역인 악랄한 여왕벌 박연진 역을 맡아 강렬한 인상을 남기며 다재다능한 배우임을 입증했다.
"When I played the character, I wanted the whole world to hate me," Lim said during an interview with The Korea Times, held at a cafe in Gangnam District, Friday. "When I take on a role for a project, I try to make viewers love and relate to my character. But I've never had to develop a character to be hated. And there was a catharsis that came from it."
임지연은 24일 강남구 한 카페에서 열린 코리아타임스와의 인터뷰에서 "내가 캐릭터를 연기할 때 온 세상이 나를 미워하길 바랐다"고 말했다. "어떤 배역을 연기하든 시청자들이 내 역할을 사랑하고 공감하게 하려고 노력한다. 하지만 미움 받는 배역을 연기해본 적은 없다. 거기서 오는 카타르시스가 있었다."
The streaming platform's Korean original series, part 2 of which was released last Friday, revolves around Moon Dong-eun (Song Hye-kyo) taking revenge on her tormentors who physically and psychologically abused her in high school.
지난 10일에 공개된 이 스트리밍 플랫폼의 한국 제작 드라마 2부는 고등학교 시절 심리적, 신체적으로 괴롭혔던 자신을 학교 폭력 가해자들에게 복수하는 문동은(송혜교 분)을 중심으로 돌아간다.
About 20 years later, Moon begins to exact her carefully planned revenge against the perpetrators, including self-entitled weathercaster Park who was her most vicious abuser among the group.
약 20년 후 문동은은 가장 무자비한 가해자였던 기상캐스터 박연진을 포함한 학교 폭력 가해자들에게 치밀한 복수를 시작한다.
Lim shared she wanted to take part in the series badly and went to great lengths to convince the director and writer that she could play the character.
임지연은 ‘더 글로리'에 참여하고 싶어서 박연진을 연기할 수 있다는 것을 감독과 작가에게 납득시키기 위해 많은 애를 썼다고 밝혔다.
"I've always wanted to play an antagonist. But I just vaguely thought that maybe when I have more experience, like in my 40s, I would be offered such a role … but then Yeon-jin came and it was such a good opportunity," she said. "I was actually nervous although, of course, I told the director and the writer that I'd do my best and that I could do it."
임지연은 "항상 악역을 해보고 싶었다. 하지만 40대 정도가 되어서 내공이 더 쌓이면 악역 제안을 받겠거니 하고 막연하게 생각했다 … 그런데 연진이가 찾아왔고 너무 좋은 기회였다"고 말했다. "물론 감독님과 작가님에게는 최선을 다할 것이고 할 수 있다고 말했지만 사실은 긴장됐다."
To convey the importance of her character in the story, she went through an agonizing, hefty process to create her character after landing the role.
드라마에서 이 역할의 중요성을 전달하려고 임지연은 배역을 맡은 후 인물을 다듬는데 고통스럽고 어려운 과정을 거쳤다.
