The K-pop industry is undergoing a tectonic shift following HYBE's acquisition of a controlling stake in SM Entertainment, with speculation mounting over how the collaboration between the two biggest K-pop powerhouses will reshape the music industry.
하이브가 SM 엔터테인먼트의 지배지분을 인수하면서 K팝 산업이 구조적 변화를 겪을 것으로 보이는 가운데 최대 규모 두 엔터 기업 사이의 결합이 음악계를 어떻게 재편성할지에 대한 예측 역시 증가하고 있다.

HYBE, home to K-pop titan BTS, announced that it will purchase a 14.8 percent stake in SM for 422.8 billion won ($335.8 million) from the company's founder Lee Soo-man. The deal will make HYBE the largest shareholder of its rival.
방탄소년단의 소속사 하이브가 이수만 회장의 SM 지분 14.8%를 4228억원에 인수한다고 밝혔다. 이번 인수로 하이브는 라이벌 SM의 최대 주주로 올라서게 됐다.

In a regulatory filing on Friday, HYBE said the deal intends to combine the global competitiveness of the two companies, to make them become game changers in the international pop music scene.
하이브는 금요일에 제출한 규제 문서에서 이번 인수가 두 회사의 글로벌 경쟁력을 결집해 세계 대중음악 시장에서 게임 체인저로 도약하도록 할 것이라고 밝혔다.

The announcement came just one day after Lee, the mastermind behind K-pop bigwigs TVXQ, Girls' Generation, EXO, NCT and aespa, threatened legal action against executives of his own company for selling 9.05 percent of the company's stock to Kakao, making the tech behemoth the second-largest shareholder.
이번 발표는 세계적인 K팝 그룹 동방신기, 소녀시대, 엑소, NCT, 에스파를 탄생시킨 총괄프로듀서 이수만이 SM 경영진이 회사 주식의 9.05%를 카카오에 매각해 이 거대 기술기업을 2대 주주로 만든 것에 대해 법적 조치를 취하겠다고 위협한 지 하루 만에 나왔다.

Lee called this move illegal, claiming SM is triggering a management dispute. The label recently terminated its contract with the 70-year-old founder as its chief producer.
이수만은 SM이 경영권 분쟁을 촉발하고 있다고 주장하며 위의 매각을 불법이라고 칭했다. SM은 최근 이 70세의 창립자와 총괄프로듀서로서의 계약을 종료했다.

Although it remains to be seen how the tug-of-war between HYBE and Kakao will pan out, industry insiders are already divided over the HYBE-SM alliance, debating whether the latest development is a blessing or a curse for the future of K-pop.
하이브와 카카오의 줄다리기가 어떻게 전개될지는 두고 봐야 하지만 업계 관계자들은 이미 하이브-SM 동맹이 K팝 미래에 축복이 될지 저주가 될 지에 대해 의견을 분분히 하고 있다.

The supporters of the HYBE-SM collaboration say it will elevate K-pop to the next level, while critics argue it will result in an oligopoly, thereby undermining diversity.
하이브-SM 결합 지지자들은 이번 결합이 K팝을 또 다른 차원으로 끌어올릴 것이라고 예측하는 한편 비평가들은 독점을 초래하여 다양성을 약화시킬 것이라고 주장한다.

"The deal is a win-win for both and will boost K-pop's global growth," Kim Jin-woo, a music business professor at Seoul Institute of the Arts and head researcher at album sales tracker Circle Chart, told The Korea Times.

If it utilizes the intellectual property of high-profile SM artists like NCT, the two will be able to create synergy and increase their pie in the overseas market."
