Bereaved families of the Itaewon crowd crush victims held a joint memorial service for their loved ones Sunday, the first Lunar New Year since the deadly tragedy in the Seoul neighborhood last year.
지난해 서울에서 발생한 참사 이후 첫 설날인 일요일, 이태원 압사 사고 유족들이 사랑하는 희생자들을 합동 차례를 가졌다.
Some 80 family members and relatives of the victims who died in the Oct. 29 crowd surge gathered at a memorial altar set up near Noksapyeong Station at 3 p.m. and paid respect.
지난 해 10월 29일 발생한 이태원 압사 사고의 희생자 유가족과 친지 약 80명은 오후 3시 녹사평역 인근에 놓인 분향소에 모였다.
Instead of the food typically prepared for Lunar New Year memorial services, they brought snacks, pizza, beer and beef jerky for the victims, who were mostly in their 20s.
유가족들은 일반적으로 설 차례상에 차려지는 음식 대신, 대부분 20대였던 희생자들을 위해 피자, 맥주, 육포 등을 가져왔다.
Many of them burst out into tears as they paid respect to the victims and bowed. Some cried as they stroked the framed photos of their loved ones at the memorial altar.
대부분의 유가족들은 희생자들을 추모하고 절을 하자 울음을 터뜨렸다. 일부 유가족들은 분향소에서 액자에 담긴 사랑하는 희생자들의 사진을 쓰다듬으며 오열했다.
"In a normal year, it would have been a jolly time for families to meet and talk. But it wasn't like that, and it won't be from now on," Lee Jong-cheol, the head of the group of the victims' families, said.
이종철 10·29 이태원 참사 유가족협의회(협의회) 대표는 "예년 같으면 가족과 일상 이야기를 나누며 즐거울 한때였겠지만 그러지 못했고 앞으로도 그러지 못할 것"이라고 말했다.
Families of the 2014 Sewol ferry sinking victims also held a memorial service in central Seoul.
2014년 세월호 희생자 가족들도 서울 도심에서 추모식을 가졌다.
"Please come together to make a safer world for our children," Kim Jong-ki, a member of the group representing the bereaved families, said. (Yonhap)
유가족 대표 중 한 사람인 김종기 씨는 "우리 아이들을 위해 더 안전한 세상을 만들 수 있도록 함께 해달라"고 말했다. (연합)
