Almost all of South Korea was shrouded Friday by a yellow dust storm originating from the Gobi Desert in northern China and Mongolia, the state weather agency said, with a fine dust advisory issued for Seoul and central western regions.
기상청은 금요일 중국 북부와 몽골의 고비사막에서 발원한 황사 폭풍으로 전국이 뒤덮였다고 전하며 서울과 중서부 지역에 미세먼지 경보를 발령했다.
The fine dust advisory was issued for Seoul, eight cities and counties in Gyeonggi Province that surrounds the capital, and six cities and counties in the central province of South Chungcheong at 2 p.m., according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).
기상청에 따르면 이날 오후 2시 서울, 경기도 8개 시·군, 충청남도 중부 6개 시·군에 미세먼지 경보가 발령됐다.
The average hourly concentration of fine dust particles smaller than 10 micrometers in diameter, known as PM 10, rose to 321 micrograms per cubic meter in Seoul on Friday afternoon, 352 micrograms in Gyeonggi Province and 371 micrograms in South Chungcheong, the KMA said.
지름이 10㎛(마이크로미터) 이하인 미세먼지(PM10)의 1시간 평균 농도는 금요일 오후 서울 321 321㎍/㎥, 경기 352㎍/㎥, 충남 371㎍/㎥까지 올라갔다고 기상청은 발표했다.
A fine dust advisory is issued when the PM 10 figure stays above 150 micrograms for longer than two hours.
미세먼지 주의보는 시간 평균 미세먼지 농도(PM10)가 150㎍/㎥ 이상으로 2시간 넘게 지속될 때 내려진다.
The state-run Air Quality Forecasting Center said the latest yellow storm is expected to spread to almost all other parts of South Korea in the afternoon and affect the entire nation until Sunday.
국립환경과학원 대기질통합예보센터는 이번 황사가 오후께 국내 전역으로 퍼지며 일요일까지 전국에 영향을 미칠 것으로 보인다고 말했다.
The density of PM 10 dust is expected to soar to "very bad" levels later in the day in the capital area, the central provinces of Gangwon and Chungcheong, the southwestern province of North Jeolla and the southwestern city Gwangju, and "bad" levels in other regions.
수도권과 강원·충청 중부, 전북 서남부, 광주광역시의 미세먼지(PM10) 농도는 오후 10시 '매우 나쁨' 수준까지 치솟고 그 밖의 지역도 '나쁨' 수준까지 치솟을 전망이다.
On Saturday, the PM 10 density will remain at the "very bad" level in the capital, Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces and the southern resort island of Jeju, the center said.
토요일에는 수도권과 충청도, 전라도, 제주도에서 미세먼지(PM10) 농도가 '매우 나쁨' 수준을 유지할 것이라고 대기질통합예보센터는 전했다.
The weather authorities here categorize concentrations of PM 10 between zero and 30 micrograms as "good," between 31 and 80 as "normal," between 81 and 150 as "bad" and more than 151 as "very bad." (Yonhap)
