The wife of Belgian Ambassador to South Korea Peter Lescouhier was questioned by police on Thursday over assault allegations, officials said, amid public criticism over "insincerity" in the embassy's handling of the matter.
벨기에 대사관의 진정성에 대한 비판적인 여론 속에 피터 레스쿠이에 주한 벨기에 대사의 부인이 폭행 혐의로 목요일 경찰 조사를 받았다고 경찰 측이 밝혔다.
The wife appeared at the Yongsan Police Station in central Seoul in the afternoon to undergo questioning and she has returned, an official at the precinct said, without providing more details.
"이날 오후 벨기에 대사 부인이 경찰서로 와 조사를 받고 돌아갔다"고 용산경찰서 관계자는 말했다.
Police have been looking into allegations that Lescouhier's wife slapped a clothing store employee in the face and another staff in the back of her head early last month.
경찰은 지난달 초 레스쿠이에 대사 부인이 옷가게 직원의 뺨을 때리고 다른 직원의 뒤통수를 때린 혐의를 조사해왔다.
The assaults allegedly happened when the employees asked the wife if she paid for the clothes she was wearing because the shop was selling the same kinds of apparel.
이 폭행 사건은 해당 옷가게가 (대사 부인의 옷과) 같은 종류의 옷을 판매 중이었기에 직원들이 대사 부인에게 옷값의 지불 여부를 물어보자 일어난 것으로 알려졌다.
The Belgian Embassy in Seoul issued an apology under the ambassador's name. The ambassador revealed that his wife had been hospitalized after having a stroke and promised she will comply with police investigation as soon as she recovers.
주한 벨기에 대사관은 대사 명의로 사과문을 발표했다. 벨기에 대사는 그의 아내가 뇌경색으로 병원에 입원했다고 밝히며 회복되는 대로 경찰 조사에 응할 것을 약속했다.
But the apology stirred angry online comments criticizing the ambassador for not being sincere, because the embassy opted to post the apology on its Facebook page, instead of delivering it in person, as well as the language that they said was improper for a formal statement expressing regret. 그러나 주한 벨기에 대사관은 사과문을 직접 발표하지 않고 페이스북에 올렸을 뿐만 아니라 유감을 표명하는 공식성명에 부적절한 언어를 사용하며 국내 네티즌들로 하여금 해당 사과문이 진정성이 없다고 비난하는 여론에 불을 지폈다.
