Police in Daegu are looking into an alleged child trafficking case involving two women ― one who disappeared after giving birth to a baby and the other who showed up claiming to be the mother.
On March 1, the first woman delivered a boy by cesarean section at a medical center in Daegu. She left the hospital, alone, saying she would come back after recovering from childbirth but then didn't return.
A few days later, a different woman showed up for the baby. While she claimed the boy's birth was registered under her name, the nurses at the hospital noticed she clearly looked different from the biological mother, so they reported her to the police.
The police questioned the second woman while also looking into the whereabouts of the biological mother. They caught the biological mother later.
It was discovered that the two had met through an online platform about six years ago and the biological mother used the other woman's name and resident registration number when delivering the baby at the hospital.
They also found the woman who claimed to be the mother had agreed to pay the hospital fees.
The police are currently investigating there were any financial transactions between the two women.
The baby has been placed in the care of a foster family.
