City to investigate sidewalk collapse

Seoul city officials are investigating why a sidewalk near a construction site collapsed, after two people fell into a hole three meters deep close to Yongsan Station on Friday.

Video footage shows the couple getting off a bus and falling into the hole almost immediately.

The two suffered scratches and were treated at nearby hospitals, according to the Yonhap News Agency.

City officials have asked the construction to be halted temporarily.

A metropolitan office is testing the area for possible other sinkholes.

According to the Yongsan Fire Department, the sinkhole is next to where Daewoo Engineering & Construction is building a 39-storey, two building apartment block.

Daewoo could be held responsible for faulty construction management, the fire department said.

The sinkhole was five meters wide.

20일 오후 2시께 서울 용산구 한강로3가의 주상복합건물 공사장 옆 인도에서 보도블록이 꺼져 보행자가 빠지는 사고가 났다.

소방당국과 관할 구청에 따르면 가로·세로 1.2ｍ 크기의 보도블록이 약 3ｍ가량 함몰됐으며 이로 인해 생긴 구멍의 너비는 5ｍ였다.

버스에서 내리던 김모(28)씨와 정모(24·여)씨는 인도에 발을 내딛자마자 구멍에 빠졌고 17분 만에 구조됐다.

이들은 다행히 크게 다치지 않고 가벼운 찰과상을 입어 병원에서 치료를 받고 있다.

용산구청 관계자는 '옆 공사장에서 기초공사 도중 토사가 유실되면서 지반침하로 인해 구멍이 생긴 것으로 추정된다'며 '현장을 통제하고 토사를 메우는 복구작업을 벌이는 중'이라고 말했다.
