Tving's 'Rose Mansion' to portray obsession, twisted desires of humans

Tving's new original series, 'Rose Mansion,' will premiere this Friday

Chang, whose real name is Yoon Hong-seung, the director of the local streaming platform Tving's new original series, "Rose Mansion," says his upcoming suspense series will follow the deep twisted desires and obsession of people.

"I wanted to tell a story with obsession as its theme. This series is about urges and obsessions. Each character is pulled toward their own obsession," the director said during an online press conference of the series, Tuesday.

The mystery thriller series, set to premiere on Friday, revolves around an apartment called the Rose Mansion that is about to undergo reconstruction.

Ji-na (Lim Ji-yeon) is a hotelier who seems to have a normal life but suffers from insecurity. One day, her sister goes missing, leading her back to her family's home at the Rose Mansion, which she has been avoiding visiting.

As Ji-na digs into her sister's disappearance with detective Min-soo (Yoon Kyun-sang), they find out there's more than just a missing person case and uncover deeper, darker secrets of the suspicious residents of the building.

The 12-part series is scripted by Yu Gap-yeol, whose previous work includes the 2014 melodrama film, "Man in Love."

The director said this series will stand out from previous mystery series, as the story unfolds in an intimately relatable setting: home.

"What makes this series different from other mystery-thriller genre works is that (the story) revolves around 'home,' which is closely related to our reality," he said. "There have been a lot of excellent attempts making various genres for stories that involve things like zombies and monsters. But this is about our daily lives."

He added that he hopes this series will lead viewers to ponder the meaning of home. "(The story) centers on Korea's most common type of housing, the apartment. And I hope this story will give an opportunity for the viewers to think about what it means to live," he said.

The two lead actors, Lim and Yoon, expressed that they fell in love with the story from the start.

"When I first read the script, I was like, 'Wow, what just happened?' I was so curious about how the story would develop and it was full of thrills," Lim said. "I just chose the series because I loved the story itself, rather than because I saw how I would portray the role or saw what makes this role attractive."

Yoon said that he finished reading the script for the whole series in one seating. "As I would read more because I was curious about the ending, I was more drawn to the cases developed in the story," he said. "After reading the whole thing, I felt like I could have fun (with the role). So I chose the series without hesitation."

"Rose Mansion" will release four episodes every Friday at 4 p.m. on Tving.
